Ear infections can be a real pain (literally!). The throbbing, muffled hearing, and general discomfort can put a damper on your day. At Interhearing, we understand the frustration ear infections cause. That's why we offer prompt, effective treatment to get you back to feeling your best.
Outer ear infections also referred to as titis externa or swimmer's ear, is an inflammation of the outer ear canal. It can be a painful condition, causing discomfort and affecting your hearing. While swimming is a common culprit, this type of ear infection can arise from other causes as well.
Understanding the Causes
There are two main categories of otitis externa: infectious and non-infectious.
Infectious: Bacteria and fungi are the most common culprits behind infectious otitis externa. Trapped water in the ear canal after swimming or showering can create a moist environment perfect for bacterial or fungal growth. People who use hearing aids or wear earplugs frequently are also more susceptible to infections. Scratching the inside of your ear canal can also introduce bacteria and lead to infections.
Non-Infectious: Various factors can irritate the ear canal without causing an infection. These include:
Use of cotton swabs, which can damage the delicate skin lining the canal.
Certain hair removal products used around the ear.
Eczema or other skin conditions that can affect the ear canal.
Exposure to harsh chemicals, such as chlorine in pools.
Signs and Symptoms
The symptoms of otitis externa can develop quickly and may include:
Ear pain, often described as sharp or throbbing
Tenderness around the ear
Itchiness inside the ear canal
A feeling of fullness or blockage in the ear
Drainage from the ear, which may be clear, yellow, or pus-filled
Don't Wait, Get Treated!
If you suspect you have otitis externa, it's crucial to see a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and speed up recovery. Treatment typically involves:
Accurate diagnosis: Our experienced ear care specialist can accurately diagnose the ear infection and clear any debris from the outer ear before starting antibiotics; this will make the treatment far more successful.
See your GP: Once we have cleared the debris from your ears then they are ready to be treated. You can see your GP who will prescribe medication that needs to be sprayed in your ears to treat the infection. If the debris isn’t removed from your ears first then the medication may not work properly.
Fast relief: Early intervention often leads to faster recovery and minimises the risk of complications.
Preventative measures: At your appointment we can discuss strategies that can help to prevent future ear infections, such as good hygiene practices. You can also check our other blog: How to Prevent Earwax Buildup?
