Is earwax build up causing you problems?

Getting an NHS appointment for ear wax removal is becoming increasingly difficult, as many GP surgeries no longer offer the service, restrict it to certain patients, or have long waiting lists. In the meantime, living with blocked ears can be frustrating and uncomfortable, and may even start to affect your work and day-to-day life.

If your hearing feels dulled, your ears feel “full,” or you’re getting crackling/pressure that won’t clear, wax may be part of the picture,  but it’s not always the cause. At Interhearing Chester, we begin with an ear examination to confirm if there is a blockage in the ear canal, then use microsuction only if earwax removal is required and appropriate.

You’ll get a clear explanation of what we can see, what we’ve done (or why we haven’t), and what to do next, including practical aftercare so you leave feeling confident, not rushed.

Discover why patients trust Interhearing for safe, professional earwax removal in Chester.

The therapist who performed my micro suction was very friendly and professional and did an excellent job although the ear wax was very impacted and I had to have a second visit which was included in the original price. Definitely recommend Interhearing.

Excellent first visit at the Interhearing clinic in Chester. I was greeted at reception. I was given excellent advise and was made to feel comfortable. The Audiologist explained what was going to happen and he made me feel at ease. The micro suction removed all the ear wax from my ears. This procedure was excellent, it was speedy and no discomfort at all. Both my ears were checked. I highly recommend Interhearing.

Second time for suction ear cleaning. Worked brilliantly a year ago. Much more pleasant that ear syringing and beats those ear wax drops hands down. Great value for £65. Both clinicians explained everything and were very considerate. Excellent service.

What happens at your appointment?

If wax isn’t the issue, we’ll explain what we can see and the most sensible next step — that’s where the £25 Ear Health Check applies.

Your visit is straightforward and clinically led:

Step 1: Ear Heath Check — we confirm whether wax is present and whether removal is suitable, and advise you on the best next steps for your ears and hearing.

Step 2: Microsuction (if appropriate) — wax is removed under magnification with gentle, controlled and water-free treatment.

Step 3: Aftercare — You’re in safe hands with our aftercare service. We’ll provide all the information you need to help keep your ears clear and healthy, with the option of a free follow-up appointment within four weeks if needed.

Microsuction vs Ear Irrigation in Chester

Category

Microsuction

Ear Syringing / Irrigation

Method

Water-free earwax removal using gentle suction under magnification.

Earwax removal using water to flush the ear canal.

Clinician Control & Precision

Performed under magnification with direct visual control for gentle, precise treatment.

Uses water rather than direct visual removal, which can be less precise.

Preparation

Minimal use of olive oil drops or spray for preparation. Suitable for same day or next day appointments.

Usually requires 7–10 days use of olive oil drops before treatment.

Suitability for Patients

Suitable for most patients, including those with narrow ear canals, a history of eardrum perforation, ear infections, or previous problems with water-based syringing.

Not suitable for everyone, especially those with hard, compacted wax, eardrum perforations, or a history of ear infections.

Professional View

Viewed by many ENT specialists and ear care professionals as the preferred treatment for earwax removal — controlled, water-free, and efficient.

Can be effective for removal of soft earwax, but not suitable for everyone.

Patient Experience

Often gentle, effective and well tolerated with a lower risk of water-related infection. There is some low pitched noise due to suction.

Can be uncomfortable or ineffective in some cases, with a higher risk of water-related infections.

Everything you need to know about wax removal in Chester

We answer the most common questions about ear wax removal, ear care, and our services in Chester.

Where is your Chester clinic located?

What should I do if I have earwax build-up?

If you’re suffering from ear wax build up, the best solution is to look for a ear wax removal specialist near you. If left untreated, built up ear wax can result in temporary hearing loss, tinnitus and other issues.

How is earwax removed at Interhearing Chester?

We use microsuction, the safest and most effective method of earwax removal. It is a gentle, water-free technique that uses a small medical suction device under direct vision to remove wax safely and precisely.

Do I need to use olive drops for weeks beforehand?

Usually not. In many cases, drops are only needed the night before and the morning of your appointment (we’ll advise when you book).

If earwax is very compacted, then ear drops for up to 3 days (twice daily) is often all that is required for effective, comfortable wax removal.

Do you offer ear syringing or ear irrrigation?

We use microsuction as our primary method. If it’s not suitable, we’ll explain the safest alternative.

How long does an ear wax removal appointment take at Interhearing Chester?

Appointments usually take 20-30 minutes, depending on how much wax is present and whether one or both ears are affected. We recommend using olive oil drops for 1-3 days before your appointment to help soften the wax.

What it it turns out I don't have wax?

We’ll explain what we can see and what to do next. The Ear Health Check is £25 if no wax is found.

How often should I remove ear wax?

Your ears have a self cleaning mechanism and so, excess earwax only needs to be removed if it is causing discomfort, pain or hearing loss.

Do you offer home visits?

At this moment we don’t offer home visits but we have professionally run clinics throughout the UK.

Do you offer same day ear wax removal?

We do! If you need your ear wax removed urgently, please contact our team to book a same day appointment (subject to availability).

Do you see patients from outside Chester?

Yes, patients travel from across Cheshire and neighbouring counties and communities for professional ear care using microsuction.
