Is earwax build up causing you problems?

When you are suffering with blocked ears, everything can feel “distant” and unclear. You might be missing parts of conversations, having to turn the TV up louder, or it may be affecting your ability to work or socialise.

With many GP surgeries no longer able to offer ear wax removal or having to set restrictions for eligibility, it can be difficult to find local ear wax removal services you can trust.

At Interhearing Oswestry, we have been helping patients to access professional, local ear care since 2009, enabling you to quickly find relief from blocked ears, without the waiting list and with no need for a GP referral.

Benefits of microsuction

Benefits of microsuction

Microsuction ear wax removal being performed by a clinician in a calm clinical setting

Microsuction is the preferred method of ear wax removal and often regarded by ENT specialists and other ear care professionals as one of the safest, fastest and most effective treatments available when carried out by a trained clinician.

  • Precise and controlled: microsuction is performed by a trained clinician under direct vision using magnifying loupes for increased accuracy and precision.

  • Water free treatment: unlike syringing/irrigation, microsuction does not flush water into the ear, so it is often safer for patients, especially those with perforated eardrums, previous ear surgery, recent ear infections or discharge and patients who have experienced previous complications from traditional syringing.

  • Most effective for hard and compacted wax: microsuction can usually clear wax that may be too hard or compacted for traditional syringing or olive oil drops.

  • Effective for hard and compacted wax: microsuction can usually clear wax that may be too hard or compacted for traditional syringing or olive oil drops.

  • Avoids water-related infections: microsuction avoids water-related problems linked to retained moisture in the ear canal.

Remember that cotton buds and similar home methods can push wax deeper, irritate the ear canal or cause damage to the ear, so it is safer and more effective to have a trained professional carry out your ear wax removal treatment.

Microsuction vs Ear Irrigation in Oswestry

Microsuction vs Ear Syringing in Oswestry

Why we use microsuction

Microsuction is water-free ear wax removal carried out under magnification, so the clinician can see what they’re doing and remove wax in a gentle, precise way. This modern method has a number of advantages, including the clear visual guidance, safer wax extraction and minimum preparation time with olive oil drops required only 1–2 days beforehand if wax is hard, deep or compacted - rather than the 10–14 days often recommended for syringing.

What about ear syringing / irrigation?

Syringing/irrigation uses water to flush the ear canal. Water-based methods aren’t suitable for everyone and can be uncomfortable or unpredictable depending on the ear and the type of wax. We primarily use microsuction; if it isn’t appropriate on the day, we’ll explain why and advise the safest next step.

Ear drops: you don’t need drops for weeks — typically just the night before and the morning of your appointment if wax is hard, deep or compacted.

Ear drops: you don’t need to use drops for days and weeks - typically just the night before and the morning of your appointment if wax is hard, deep or compacted.

Free follow-up (if needed): if an earwax blockage is very compacted and in the rare event that can’t be safely cleared in one visit, follow-ups are free as long as they’re booked within 4 weeks of your first treatment.

What if no wax is present?

Every appointment begins with an ear health check, so you can rest assured that we will only offer treatment when it is needed. If no wax is present, we will talk you through your options and next steps, which may include advising a visit to your local GP for treatment or referral. If there is no ear wax to remove,  you will only be charged £25 consultation fee for your appointment.

Everything you need to know about ear wax removal in Oswestry

We answer the most common questions about ear wax removal, ear care, and our services in Oswestry.

What should I do if I have ear wax build-up?

If you’re suffering from ear wax build up, the best solution is to look for a ear wax removal specialist near you. If left untreated, built up ear wax can result in temporary hearing loss, tinnitus and other issues.

Do I need to use olive oil drops for weeks beforehand?

Usually not. Unlike traditional syringing, using olive oil drops for 1 -2 days before your treatment, particularly the night before and the morning of your appointment is enough.

Do you offer ear syringing or ear irrigation?

We use microsuction as our primary method. If it’s not suitable, we’ll explain the safest alternative.

How long does an ear wax removal appointment take at Interhearing Oswestry?

Appointments usually take 20-30 minutes, depending on how much ear wax is present and whether one or both ears are affected. We recommend using olive oil drops for 1-3 days before your appointment to help soften the wax.

How often should I remove ear wax?

Your ears have a self cleaning mechanism and so, excess ear wax only needs to be removed if it is causing discomfort, pain or hearing loss.

Do you offer home visits?

At this moment we don’t offer home visits but we have professionally run clinics throughout the UK.

Do you offer same day ear wax removal?

We do! If you need your ear wax removed urgently, please contact our team to book a same day appointment (subject to availability).

Do you see patients from outside Oswestry?

Yes, patients travel from across Shropshire and neighbouring counties and communities for professional ear care using microsuction.
