Having trouble hearing?
Blocked ears can leave you with muffled hearing, an earache, itchy ears or even a ringing sound, known as tinnitus.
You may be more prone to ear wax blockages if you have narrow ear canals; regularly wear hearing aids, hearing protection, headphones or earbuds, or if your earwax has become harder and drier with age.
Some people naturally produce more ear wax, which can build up and become compacted, especially if cotton buds or other objects are used to try to remove wax at home. If you have a skin condition in or around your ears, such as eczema, or a history of ear infections, you may also be more likely to experience blockages due to a buildup of dry skin.
At Interhearing Shrewsbury, we begin with an ear health check at our clinics and only carry out microsuction when it is clinically appropriate. Microsuction ear wax removal is a precise treatment - controlled and clearly explained throughout, with no GP referral required.
If earwax is not the cause of your symptoms, we can provide you with helpful advice and recommendations, and you will only pay our £25 consultation fee rather than the full treatment cost.

Microsuction
A Safer Alternative to Ear Syringing
Regain clarity with gentle microsuction earwax removal
At Interhearing, we use microsuction earwax removal, a gentle, safe and water-free method carried out under magnification. This allows your clinician to see clearly inside the ear canal and remove wax in a controlled, precise way. A small suction tube is used to carefully remove the blockage and treatment is usually completed within a single appointment.
Unlike traditional ear syringing or irrigation, microsuction does not introduce water into the ear canal, helping to reduce unnecessary discomfort or the risk of water-related infection. Often no olive oil preparation is required, or only minimal use if earwax is especially compacted, hard or dry. Microsuction is often suitable for people with a history of ear infections and perforations, as well as those who cannot tolerate, or prefer not to have, water-based treatments such as syringing.

The Ear Wax Removal Procedure
Your appointment begins with a clinical ear examination to confirm whether wax is present and whether removal is appropriate.
If treatment goes ahead, wax is removed carefully under magnification so that your ears are clean and clear again. After the procedure, you’ll receive practical aftercare advice and guidance to help you maintain healthy ears.
If no wax is found, we’ll talk you through the possible causes of your hearing loss or muffled hearing, and advise on the next steps you can take.
Most patients describe the procedure as comfortable and effective. Appointments take around 20 - 30 minutes in total.
Aftercare and ear health advice
After microsuction earwax removal, most patients return to their normal activities with symptoms usually improving immediately or occasionally within one or two days after treatment. If you find that you are still experiencing symptoms after 2 or 3 days, then we are here to help with a free clinical follow-up within 4 weeks of your initial appointment.
Keeping your ears healthy and clear is an ongoing process
If you are prone to earwax build-up, and are safely able to use olive oil drops or spray, then application once or twice a week in each ear can help keep earwax soft and reduce the chance of future blockages.
However, if you are experiencing ear pain, discharge, infection or have a history of ear perforations or surgery, always speak to your GP or Pharmacist before using olive oil or ear drops.
Seek professional treatment early
If you do begin to experience any of the symptoms associated with earwax build-up, then seeking professional advice and treatment in the early stages will really help. It is a good idea to book an annual appointment to help monitor and prevent excessive earwax build-up, much like you would visit your optician or dentist for regular check-ups or treatment.
Some patients may benefit from more regular appointments, around every 3 to 6 months, especially those who regularly wear hearing aids, headphones or hearing protection, have narrow ear canals or naturally produce more earwax. This way you can continue to enjoy better hearing without the frustration or discomfort associated with earwax build-up.
