Most people who come to see us have noticed one or two of these:
✓
The TV goes up a little more each month
✓
You ask people to repeat themselves
✓
Busy cafés and family meals are tiring to follow
✓
Phone calls are harder than they used to be
✓
Someone at home has mentioned it
Not sure? That’s what the test is for. Around a quarter of the people we test don’t need hearing aids, and we’ll tell you if you’re one of them.
Sudden hearing loss in one ear? Don’t wait for an appointment with us. Contact your GP or NHS 111 the same day.
Ringing or buzzing in your ears? Mention it, and we’ll include it in your assessment.

1.

We talk.
Your audiologist asks about the places and moments you find hardest to hear.
2.

We test.
We look in your ears first. If there’s a lot of earwax, we may suggest having it removed first. Then a full hearing assessment, with your results explained in plain terms. Your hearing test takes about 45 minutes.
3.

You try hearing aids, if they’d help.
We book a second appointment to fit your trial hearing aids, programmed for your hearing. You take them home for 14 days, free. No obligation.
Your trial fitting is a second appointment, also about 45 minutes.

Whether they’re from the NHS, a high-street chain or anyone else, bring the aids you wear now. We’ll test your hearing, check how your current aids are set up, and let you compare them with newer ones during your trial. If yours are still doing the job, we’ll tell you.
One honest note: if your aids were fitted by Hidden Hearing or Amplifon, we can’t reprogram them. We can still test your hearing and show you how they compare.

We’re a family-run, independent clinic. We aren’t tied to one manufacturer, so we recommend what suits your hearing and your budget. We fit Phonak, Oticon, Starkey, ReSound, Signia, Widex, Unitron and Bernafon hearing aids.

Rated 5.0 on Google from 534 reviews of our Radbrook clinic.
“My first re-assessment (after receiving hearing aids previously) to check my hearing and see if any adjustments were needed was handled very professionally and with courtesy by Sarkhab at the Shrewsbury location.”
John Showell, Shrewsbury
“Although I didn’t require any hearing aids, I was given excellent practical advice on how to manage some hearing issues.”
Rhi, Church Stretton
You’re very welcome to bring a family member or friend. Many people do, and it helps to have a second pair of ears when we talk through your results.

Free
▸
Is the hearing test free?
It’s free if you’re 60 or over. Otherwise it’s £25.
▸
Do I have to buy anything?
No. If you don’t need hearing aids, or don’t want them, nothing more is asked of you.
▸
How long does a hearing test take?
About 45 minutes. If you go on to try hearing aids, the fitting is a second appointment of about 45 minutes.
▸
Can I come with my mum or dad?
Yes. You’re very welcome to come in with them.
▸
Is this the hospital audiology department?
No. We’re a private, independent clinic, not the NHS or the hospital audiology department. You don’t need a referral.
▸
What if my current hearing aids are fine?
Bring them. We’ll check them and tell you honestly if they’re still right for you.
▸
What happens at a hearing test?
We start by talking about where you find hearing hardest, then look in your ears and test your hearing. We explain your results in plain terms. If hearing aids would help, we book a second appointment to fit a free 14-day trial. If you don’t need them, we’ll tell you.
▸
Do I need a GP referral for a private hearing test?
No. You can book directly with us online or call 01743 647020. NHS hearing tests usually need a GP referral.
▸
Can I get hearing aids on the NHS instead?
Yes. NHS hearing aids are free, usually through a GP referral. If cost is the deciding factor, that’s a good route. With us you choose from eight brands, including Phonak and Oticon, and can try hearing aids at home for 14 days before you decide.
▸
Which Shrewsbury clinic should I choose?
Whichever is easier to reach. Our Radbrook (SY3 6DU) and Belle Vue (SY3 7QR) clinics both have free parking, and our town centre clinic is inside Martin Haynes Eyecare, 7 High Street (SY1 1SP). When you book online, you choose your clinic and see the times available.
▸
Do you see patients from Church Stretton?
Yes. Our Church Stretton clinic at the Mayfair Community Centre, Easthope Road, SY6 6BL also runs hearing tests, or you can come to any of our Shrewsbury clinics.
▸
I have ringing in my ears. Is this test for me?
Yes. Tell us about the ringing or buzzing at the start, and we’ll include it in your assessment and explain your results and options in plain terms.
▸
Can I have a hearing test in Oswestry?
Our Oswestry clinic offers ear wax removal only. For a hearing test, our nearest clinics are in Shrewsbury.
▸
Can I do an online hearing test instead?
Online checks can tell you whether to get your hearing tested. They can’t look in your ears or measure your hearing in a quiet room the way a full test does, and they can’t fit hearing aids. If an online check suggests a problem, book a full hearing test.
