The Ear Wax Removal Procedure
Microsuction is a quick and safe way to remove ear wax. At Interhearing, microsuction is performed by NHS experienced ear car professionals. The microsuction technique uses gentle suction to clean the ear and is much safer and more comfortable than all other forms of ear cleaning, including syringing and irrigation.
With microsuction, there is no need to use ear drops for weeks prior to treatment, just the night before, and the morning of your appointment. A small, thin probe is directed at the ear wax in the ear canal, and then gentle suction is applied to slowly remove the ear blockage.
Free follow up appointmentIf it is not possible to clear the ear completely at the first sitting, then you can come back to see us for free follow ups until the job is done.
Why is ear wax a problem?
Ear wax can cause discomfort, dizziness, pain and hearing loss. Removing it alleviates these issues and brings a greater feeling of wellbeing.
Removal of wax is especially important for users of hearing aids as the earpiece often inhibits the natural migration of wax from the ear. This build-up of wax can reduce the effectiveness of hearing aids.

When there is a problem with one earSo to keep things simple, whether one or both ears need wax removing, we charge one standard fee of £65.
then the other isn’t far behind
What is micro-suction?
When it comes to earwax removal, cotton buds just make things worse, and syringing can cause severe discomfort and other side effects such as infections and vertigo.
If you want to remove wax, the safest and most comfortable way to do it is by microsuction. Unlike ear syringing, with microsuction there’s no need to wait until the ear is totally blocked with wax and you won’t need to use ear drops.
Benefits of micro-suction
- Can be used on people where ear syringing is contraindicated (i.e. patients with a history of perforations, infections, ear operations etc.)
- Unlike syringing, ear wax can be removed even if the eardrum is still visible and not fully blocked by wax
- Significantly lower risk of perforation and infection
- Not necessary to use ear drops prior to wax removal
- Commonly used when syringing has not been successful
- No long waiting list
- Speeds up Audiological referrals for patients requiring hearing aids
Here’s what some of our patients near Leigh have said about their service
Lost my hearing due to swimming, and after the flight back from holiday, doctors diagnosed wax was the problem and referred me for treatment, but waiting list was 2 months! Only partial hearing in one ear coming and going, could not wait as I could not work.
Looked on the internet and managed to get an appointment at Shrewsbury the following day. Was easy to book Julie, sorted out my hearing in 20 mins so grateful to her. So nice and professional. Interhearing provides an excellent service and are highly recommended.
Very pleased with all aspects of clinic. Nurse was great, took time to explain all stages as she carried out procedure.
